ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM TARGETS YOUTHS AT B-BOY CITY

Austin, TX – Come join BiGAUSTIN, and dozens of other proud sponsors, at B-Boy City 10, going on Oct 31st-Nov 2nd. The events start off with a premiere video of B-Boy City 9’s finals, from 7-9pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema North. Competition begins on Nov 1st at 5pm at the Montopolis Recreation Center, and runs until midnight. Ruta Maya Coffee House will host the finals and after party, starting at 4pm on Nov 2nd.

Business Investment Growth (BiG) is building partnerships for its new Youth Program, set to start in January of 2004. BiG has contacted B-Boy City to try to connect the energetic creativity of young artists with the business savvy required for successful entrepreneurship. For nearly a decade BiGAUSTIN has offered small loans and business education classes to existing and aspiring entrepreneurs, most of whom reside in low-income communities in Central Texas. Now, BiG would like to expand its outreach efforts to include young people who have the ideas and the talent, but not the financial know-how to bring their business ideas to fruition.

The Youth Program of BiG will allow young adults the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to realize their entrepreneurship potential while redefining their concept of business, leadership and wealth. The program is a natural extension of the entrepreneurship programs already in existence at BiG. The program is designed to bring entrepreneurship know-how to the minority, disadvantaged, at-risk, and low-income youth between the ages of 17-25 in East and South Austin. The program will offer a year-long entrepreneurship program that includes a general business training component, technical assistance, and access to markets.

B-Boy city is a city-to-city hip-hop gathering and is one of the biggest b-boy events in the southern United States. The event takes place in Austin twice annually, and attracts artists from all over Texas, surrounding states, nationally, and on a few occasions internationally. The event provides an avenue for youth to express themselves, getting them off the streets, and ultimately into leading a more positive lifestyle. B-Boy City is owned and produced by Romeo Navarro. Navarro is one of the most respected freestyle dancers of the South and Southwest and has been dancing all his life. He began renting places like the American Legion to put on b-boy concerts and performances and in 1999 he held the first B-Boy city convention.
